As the year comes to an end, I would like to report to you on a complete sequence of events and issues that your Board of Directors undertook since elected in March 2016.
In the 2 nd quarter we were initially engaged in responding to and resolving several outstanding items, from an AGLC Audit, that we inherited from previous years Administrations. In this process, we reviewed former Board minutes, attempted to locate and identify certain documents and upgrade office files. During this period, preliminary preparation was also undertaken for the Boian Museum Cultural picnic and the Edmonton Heritage Festival.
In the 3 rd quarter, our event at Boian turned out to be an outstanding success, whereby attendance was much higher than previous years, due to an excellent program presentation. This resulted in a small shortfall of food, even though we increased it by 30% over the previous year.
The Edmonton Heritage Festival was also a great success, though we did not achieve our anticipated profits, due to a down time of a Heritage electrical problem at our station and weather. As a result, at the end, a large amount of surplus perishable food was donated and thankfully received by the Youth Emergency Shelter. Again, we are grateful to our Chairperson and associates, who put in long and tireless hours for this event. The numerous volunteers, who participated, had a good and respectable time in providing a showcase of their Romanian culture and Community to Edmonton.
In the 4th quarter we engaged a Contractor to do a complete internal renovation and upgrade of the large building at the Museum for additional purposes, which should be completed by May 2017. Also in this quarter our Cultural and Social Committees held a general account fund raising Event. In attendance to entertain approx. 200 people were the Petrecere Romaneasca group of entertainers from Romania. They were given rave reviews and consideration is being given, if they are going to do another circuit in Canada, to engage them in February.
Lastly in October, we were able to initiate a joint effort between the Society and the Edmonton Romanian Church to establish a children and youth cultural dance program. With the donation of the hall by the Church and the assistance of Balada dance instructors, some Board members and parents, we now have approx. 30 students enrolled.
In conclusion it has been a busy 9 months. Our society has to appreciate and be grateful to the various Chairpersons, their families, members, friends and others, who put in such a great voluntary effort in the success of the numerous events and programs that were undertaken. In future we look forward to attracting more volunteers and are thankful for the ones we do have.
In closing I would like to extend my utmost appreciation to the Executive and Board members for their respect and their attention to project an honourable and reputable representation of the Society and Romanian community.
We look forward to the year 2017 as we participate in the celebration of Canada’s 150 year anniversary.
